Del Lago Academy, a new high school in the Escondido school district is a new school in an otherwise old community and school district, Del Lago academy, with the support of Keith Nuthall its principal and belief system architect, has allowed new 21st century education innovation to be accessed by students who have seen little innovation in their lives.
The school features career pathways the highlight of which is their medical pathway. The school has partnered with a neighboring medical facility to bring internships to all students, real life practice that will provide a real sense of accomplishment for many.
Aside from the medical pathway, the school’s focus on education is refreshing and motivating, providing a view on education where students are truly first. The educational motto for the school is, “Don’t suspend relationships. Restore Them!!” While a school’s motto is often about teaching students for a better tomorrow through 21st century education, Del Lago Academy took it upon themselves to brightly focus on the student’s health, well-being, excitement, and desire for school. Principal Nuthall explained that this focus helped plan out how the school would be and how it would be set up. From the motto to the classroom, the school is student centered, having learning be based off social processes, no bells to train students when to be in and leave class, and end of the day activities to get students to have fun together.
Where the student centered focus of the school probably must do wonders for the students, the extent and method of obtaining the goal also seems to strand the equity in education. Del Lago has few pathways to cater to all student desires, does not allow differentiation in higher and lower level classes, and does little to give students a voice in the classes they take.
Del lago Academy is one of the new 21st century schools that is looking to change the status quo in education, but also is working to figure out how to do so. The school has little history, and is looking for change. The beliefs of the school and educators there are in the right mindset. If the next few years shows success, then many schools should be looking to model Del Lago Academy for their own change, and all schools need to make sure that their motto mirrors Del
