On April 28, 2014, Carlsbad High School welcomed myself and the rest of the California State University Single Subject Credential students to their school to attend a workshop put on by their Gay Straight Alliance club. The Gay Straight Alliance Club, or GSA for short, is a club that is focused on bringing support for the LGBTA community on campus so that students can all students can feel safe and welcomed. The club does many outreach activities at the school and is involved a every school event. They are sure that their voice will not be silenced and that all students will feel representation.
When Carlsbad High School's GSA's club had myself and the rest of the San Marco Credential program on campus, they performed an activity that they have done in the past for students and other teachers at the school. The activity was done to bring awareness to new teachers so that they will understand how to behave and welcome the LGBTA community, both silent and voiced, at their school site. The activity had group of both GSA students from Carlsbad and Credential students from San Marcos to work together through different activities through the meeting. These activities included a vocabulary activity where groups were able to collaborate to match words and definitions related to sex and gender. It was interesting for me to find that both GSA and credential students had trouble with numerous vocabulary words and that all group members needed to be educated. Just through this activity, I knew that this activity would be very beneficial for group members involved.
Throughout the session, my group and I progressed through various other activities. We ended with an activity where we read and discussed real GSA members stories about hardships that they have faced. This is where emotions of everyone in the group were expressed. The stories were saddening and it is where many of us really found that issues that we had all thought were fading in history are still prevalent. The stories inspired me to ensure that I, as a teacher, am responsible to fight for the needs of all students and to be extra cautious towards what students say and the attitudes, behavior, and small behavior changes in students so that I can identify issues and proceed to solve them as quickly as possible.
The day was very beneficial and is something that I will proceed to fight for as a teacher and as a human being.
